Release Notes
The Geophysics Toolbox contains more than 50 plug-ins enhancing the functionality and workflows in Petrel geophysics. From data analysis and QC of your seismic data, to new interpretation options, workflows and python programming in Petrel. The toolbox has several releases per year with functionality based on Petrel user feedback.
  • Frequency spectrum for investigating the seismic signal and resolution
  • Make/Merge cubes. Effective tools for managing multiple surveys/vintages, and optimize use of memory
  • Re-sample 2D seismic
  • Re-sample 3D seismic with full control of the resolution and orientation
  • Amplitude balancing for controlling seismic merge operations
  • Auto crop cube to remove empty inlines and crosslines. This reduces the size of the cube and optimizes the memory usage
  • Live seismic traces map that shows where in your seismic cube you have empty/dead traces. Important tool to QC your data before starting the interpretation
  • Create and expand 2D seismic lines to improve generation of composite seismic sections
  • Create velocity cubes from point data to better handle large data sets for depth conversion
  • Flatten seismic in the 3D window for improved interpretation
  • Seismic interpretation data objects. Various new operations available: flatten, unflatten, merge, smooth, clean, copy, mathematical operations, etc
  • Make boundary around a seismic interpretation to help the surface gridding process
  • Pre-defined naming conventions for seismic horizons. Control how your Petrel users are to name the new interpretations
  • Display a dip indicator in your Interpretation window. Very useful to quickly see your dip angles while interpreting
  • Display seismic attributes in the Interpretation window. Improves and speeds up your  interpretation work!
  • Convert cube data to a point data set. This can be very useful when you want to do cross plotting
  • Sample point attributes from a seismic cube object. This can be very useful when you want to do cross plotting
  • Depth shift of well logs
  • Set color of multiple data objects in one operation
  • Import images as seismic 2D lines to improve interpretation of regional trends, outcrop data, scanned 2D seismic, etc
  • General ASCII data reader for 3D interpretation and seismic cube data
  • Export of seismic navigation data
  • Multi Segy export to speed up the export process
  • Import point data (ASCII) directly into a seismic cube object. Point data in Petrel use a lot of memory, and when having large point data set, this tool helps you avoid memory crashes in Petrel.
  • Import IESX 2D/3D interpretations as points
  • Make well log from seismic. This tool creates a new log from an input seismic volume and a well. Select the well and the seismic volume, specify a sampling rate and press Apply. A great tool for various purposes, e.g. compare seismic attribute with other logs etc
  • Surface <-> 3D interpretation. This tool lets the user convert from a surface to 3D interpretation and the other way round. This is a quick way of converting the interpretation to a surface without using the “Make surface” Petrel tool, or create an interpretation horizon based on surface input without using points to create the horizon.
  • Flip 2D seismic. Sometimes 2D seismic might come with the correct navigation but with flipped content. This tool adds horizontal and vertical flipping options for 2D seismic.
  • Seismic attribute ranking. This tool makes it possible to rank a set of seismic attributes according to their ability to linearly approximate a log. This enables the user to quickly identify the best (in the least squares error sense) subset of attributes to feed into a neural network for log approximation outside wells. Without this tool, testing sets of attributes is a very labor intensive task
  • Seismic stacking. This is a technique similar to where you stack multiple inlines/xlines to remove noise and enhance fluid effects and laterally non dipping reflectors. This tool is also referred by some as Optical stacking
  • Folded seismic stacking (FSS) is a tool that enables the user to stack a seismic section along the contours of a structure. This lets the user identify gas and fluid contacts hard to spot from the seismic itself. Outputs are: 1) a stacked 2D line in a given direction, 2) 3D & 2D interpretation with attributes, 3) Stacking polygons and intersections
  • Seismic correlation. The Petrel function window currently does not support crossplotting of seismic data. The seismic correlation tool lets the user crossplot seismic data in the function window by converting to a crossplot object or to points. This makes it possible to create filters and estimate functions from seismic data.
  • Net-to-gross estimation. The Net/Gross tool lets the user investigate various statistics over a single seismic volume or over multiple realizations of multiple seismic volumes (E.g. stochastic inversion realizations). It is possible to investigate Net/Gross or the net thickness between a top and a base surface. The net to gross utility outputs “Net to gross” or “Net thickness” maps within a user defined target interval.
  • Import of GeoTIFF image files. The loader reads the embedded geo referenced information, including the EPSG code.
  • Export of Petrel data to the Velocity Manager software from Cambridge Petroleum.
  • + more
The functionality ranges from seismic data analysis tools, data manipulation and editing, seismic interpretation operations, and expanded data import/export options.
