Petrel
Operating System / Third-Party Software
Ocean has been tested on the Windows 7 operating system. The release notes with each Ocean release provide details on the specific operating systems supported by that release.
See Release Notes for more detailed information.
Third-Party Software
The following third-party software is needed for developing Ocean modules:
  • Ocean 2015, 2016: Visual Studio 2013 or 2015 as specified in the release notes.
  • Ocean 2014: Visual Studio 2012 Standard or Professional edition. Ocean 2014 does not support Visual Studio 2013 or newer.
  • OpenInventor (3D graphics) toolkit. OpenInventor is an integral part of the Ocean API. It is not separately licensed, but can only be used in the context of Ocean and Petrel. OpenInventor is provided by Visualization Sciences Group. If a stand-alone version of OpenInventor is required, you need to purchase a license directly from Visualization Sciences Group. More information may be found at www.vsg3d.com.
  • GeoToolkit from INT is an integral part of the Ocean API that is used for rendering data in the Petrel Wellsection window. It is not separately licensed, but can only be used in the context of Ocean and Petrel. If a stand-alone version of GeoToolkit is required you need to purchase a license directly from INT. More information may be found at http://www.int.com.
See Release Notes for more detailed information.
Ocean Distribution

Ocean is tied to a Petrel release but distributed as a separate installer. Petrel and Visual Studio should be installed prior to installing Ocean. The Ocean installation kit will install the following:

  • A custom Ocean start page and Ocean wizard add-ins in Visual Studio to accelerate the development of Ocean plug-ins.
  • Ocean API documentation (.chm files).
  • Source code for sample Ocean for Petrel plug-ins.
  • An Ocean Getting Started Guide.
Product Licenses

An Ocean Developers License is legally required to create Ocean plug-ins. The licensing of the plug-in is the responsibility of the plug-in developer and the Ocean API provides classes to help with the licensing.

An Ocean Developers License provides access to all licensable modules of the Petrel and Studio platforms. When running Petrel using an Ocean Developers License the windows will be watermarked indicating that the Ocean Developers License is in use. If a Petrel project is saved when running under an Ocean Developers License the project will be tainted, with appropriate warning, and will not be able to be opened when running Petrel with a production Petrel license.
