Successful Conclusion of 2nd Ocean Plug-in Competition at CUPDC May 2018
Thursday, May 17, 2018

An Ocean Plug-in Competition was included for the second time as part of the 8th China Petroleum Engineering Design Competition (CPEDC) at the China University of Petroleum (Beijing) on May 12th. CPEDC is the most important competition among all the Chinese petroleum universities and colleges. It is organized by the China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC), China Association for Science and Technology Children & Youth Centre, Chinese National Committee for World Petroleum Council, the Chinese Petroleum Society, and China Petroleum Education Society. The CPEDC is sponsored by PetroChina, Sinopec, CNOOC, and Schlumberger. More than 10,000 students from over 17 universities participated in various competitions. The Ocean Plug-in Competition is the only software competition included.

The Ocean Plug-in Competition was organized by a committee from the Schlumberger FEA GeoMarket Beijing office. The organizing committee was lead by Xi Yuan and included Rui Cui (G&G mentor), Fengming Ruan (G&G mentor), Longjun Zhang (RE mentor), Xiao Wang (G&G mentor), Xing Li (Ocean mentor), and Gaige Wang (Ocean Mentor). Starting in early March the committee received more than 20 abstracts for plug-in design ideas from 12 universities. All ideas submitted showed passion of the students for their field. From these ideas 6 finalist were chosen to compete in the final event at CPEDC with less than 2 months to develop their plug-ins and prepare their presentation. The finalist teams came from Chengdu University of Technology, Southwest Petroleum University, Yangtze University, and China University of Petroleum (Beijing). Their plug-in names are: "TOC Prediction", "Shale Economic Investment Evaluation", "Shale Gas Langmuir Multi-space Adsorption Model (LMSAM) System", "Shale Gas Reservoir Geological Prediction Technology (SGRGPT)", "Describing Reservoir Heterogeneity by Lorentzs Coefficient Quantitatively", and "Permeability Interpretation Based on FZI".

The competitors’ plug-ins were presented to an audience of judges and included live demonstrations of the plug-in operation. The judges scored the plug-ins based on 5 criteria which included innovation, business value, user interface appearance, quality of presentation (presentations were in English), and response to the judges questions. The students not only shared their excellent academic knowledge, but also showed their presentation skills and powerful teamwork. The demonstration of their plug-ins helped them get high appreciation and applause of the judges and audience. Their special knowledges and skills are important technologies in this industry. What our students showed demonstrated their abilities to innovate, seek business opportunity, and extend the Schlumberger Petrel platform to accomplish their goal.

After the final presentation the 9 judges submitted their results and the results were announced at the CPEDC awards ceremony the following day. The results were:

1st place: team "Ocean Dream" from China University of Petroleum(Beijing) for their plug-in "Permeability Interpretation Based on FZI",

2nd place: team "2013100" from China University of Petroleum(Beijing) for their plug-in "Describing Reservoir Heterogeneity by Lorentzs Coefficient Quantitatively",

3rd place: team "Sail Ocean" from Yangtze University for their plug-in "Shale Gas Reservoir Geological Prediction Technology (SGRGPT)".
